Week 6 Thoughts

Almost time to go home, but I wanted to post a few thoughts...

I'm really impressed by Marion Local. I Emceed the "Lift-a-thon" this summer and they didn't have as much weight as the 2007 State Championship team. Not that weight-lifting translates into great football players, but last years team was so big and strong, that they controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, making it easy to dictate the pace of the game.

But this year's team has really grown each week (I saw them Week 2 at Harvest Prep), and Tim Goodwin and his staff simply have a great system in place down in Maria Stein. It helps having a guy like Ben Smith to carry the football, as he can change direction at a moments notic'e, but every year, the Flyers seems to have a "new" great runner. (See Ben Schaeffer last year and Marc Otte the year before)

Also in the MAC, Anna set itself apart tonight, by beating St. Henry at the Wally Post Athletic Complex. I'm looking forward to the Rockets Week 10 showdown with the Flyers.

I must say I am surprised that Defiance was able to beat Shawnee on the road. This obviously puts a huge hole in Shawnee's playoff aspirations (though a win over St. Marys comes with a lot of Computer points). But between Travis Spitnale and Alex Nofziger, the Bulldogs can score just enough points, to let their defense do the rest. That makes the League title St. Mary's to lose, and the 'Riders have been close to doing just that. But to me, winning close games in the regular season (as they have over Celina and O-G), is more important then blowing a team out. Those experiences could pay huge dividens if St. Marys runs into the same situation in the playoffs.

Delphos Jefferson at Ada. Week Number 9. Write it Down. The NWC title will be decided at War Memorial Park. That same week, the BVC crown will most likely be up for the grabs with Pandora-Gilboa visiting Liberty-Benton. Add to that the Findlay vs. Lima Sr. rivalry game, and we have lots to look forward to on October 17.

But I'll be patient in getting there. Each week is a lot of fun. The atmosphere at Elida (for Bath) was even a good one, even though both teams have been struggling. There's just something about High School football.
