I've been a "volleyball guy" for more then a decade now. It all started when my high school coach spent two years recruiting me to play guys volleyball in Pennsylvania (Yes they have boys high schoo VBl in PA---in fact, the only state that has more high school teams is California).
Since that time, I have really grown to love the game. Part of the reason, was I was good at it and didn't have to move more then 3 feet in one direction. See, I wasn't allowed to serve, or even set foot in the back row. That was fine with me. I was more than content to spike and block and then sit on the bench when a defensive specialist replaced me for half a rotation (which gives me HUGE appreciation for all the liberos out there that pass and dive and dig without getting much of the glory).
All that said, I really appreciate the volleyball in our area. 3 NWC teams are state-ranked as are another 5 MAC teams. Add to that teams like Jefferson, St. John's, Kalida, Leipsic, Celina, O-G and Shawnee and you have a comprehensive list of state powers. I would be shocked if our area didn't crown BOTH a Division III And Division IV state Champion this year. There are just so many good teams and so many high-caliber players.
This thursday, we will have another "1st" for TV-44 Sports. Deb Schenk will join me as we re-broadcast the UNOH volleyball contest with Mt. Vernon Nazarene. In that game alone, we will see 4 ladies that excelled locally in high school as Courtney Springer (Crestview) represents MVNU and Brooke Vandermark (Allen East), Chelsea Crow (LCC), and Meagan Enyart (Temple Christian) put on the Racer colors.
It's a great time of year! Enjoy the volleyball action! |
