Michigan has their man, hiring Rich Rodriguez away from West Virginia. Did they get the right man? We’ll see. we know Rodriguez certainly wasn’t their first choice. He’s done a good job of bringing West Virginia back to national prominence, albeit in a weakened Big East Conference. He’s credited as creator of the spread offense (can’t defense it, hire the guy that created it). But, I don’t think he’s the best fir for the job. Look as his West Virginia teams the last few years, great amount of talent, but what’s their legacy? Losing games they should have won (South Florida in 06, Pittsburgh in 07). Is that Michigan really wants, a coach who can’t win the big game. I thought that’s why every one wanted Lloyd Carr gone. Of course, losing Big Games is a big part of Michigan’s tradition, (Bo went 2-8 in Rose Bowls, Carr lost his last 4 Bowl games, including 3 Rose Bowls). But seriously, I think Rodriguez is another John Cooper, a fine coach, who’ll win plenty of games, but will never quite fully grasp the enormity of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. When he announced his retirement Carr was asked if the next coach had to be a “Michigan man,” and he said no, pointing out neither Bo Schembechler, Fritz Crisler nor Fielding Yost were Michigan Men, yet they did pretty well, and true Woody Hayes was an outside to The Rivalry, but Woody, like Bo, came into the job understanding the unique rivalry. I think Rodriguez is going to struggle to figure that out.
